Warwick gets $500,000 to hire 4 new police officers; Woonsocket gets $125,000 to hire 1 new police officer

WARWICK, RI – U.S. Senators Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse and U.S. Representatives Jim Langevin and David Cicilline today announced that two Rhode Island law enforcement agencies are receiving a total of $625,000 to add five more police officers to patrols this year.  The Warwick Police Department will receive $500,000 to hire four officers and the Woonsocket Police Department will receive $125,000 to hire one officer.

PAWTUCKET, RI – U.S. Representatives Keith Ellison (D-MN) and David N. Cicilline (D-RI) today welcomed President Obama’s decision to extend Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) for Liberians living legally in the United States by 2 years. The current DED protection was set to expire on September 30, 2014, which could have sent thousands of Liberian refugees back to their home country where over 3,200 Ebola virus cases have been reported, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Representatives David N. Cicilline (D-RI) and Matt Cartwright (D-PA) urged U.S. Department of Labor Secretary Thomas Perez to take immediate action to prohibit tobacco farms from using children for work that can have dangerous effects on their health. The Representatives sent a letter to Secretary Perez requesting him to close a loophole that allows children over the age of 12 to perform hands on work with tobacco plants and leaves.

PROVIDENCE, RI – Today, Rhode Island’s Congressional delegation and Governor Lincoln D. Chafee announced that the U.S. Department of Defense’s Office of Economic Adjustment (OEA) is awarding Rhode Island a one-year, $1.57 million grant to help boost the state’s economy and help it diversify.  With defense budgets projected to decline in the foreseeable future due to sequestration, this federal grant will help the state better prepare our manufacturers and communities for adjustment, economic diversification, and meeting the challenges and opportunities ahead.
