Working Hard for Rhode Island

It has been my honor to serve the women, men, and families of Rhode Island’s First Congressional District. These have been extremely difficult times for our state and nation, and I am working hard every day to deliver results for Rhode Islanders. Whether it is advocating for federal funding to help Rhode Island recover from this pandemic, championing infrastructure investments that create good paying jobs in our state, leading the fight to combat corporate monopolies, end price gouging, and provide relief to consumers, fighting for the priorities that reflect our shared values, or helping constituents secure the benefits they’ve earned and deserve – I am grateful for the opportunity to be there for Rhode Islanders. I humbly ask for your support so we can continue this work together. – David N. Cicilline, Member of Congress

PAWTUCKET, RI – In an effort to promote innovation and engage students in science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM), U.S. Congressman David N. Cicilline (D-RI) today urged Rhode Island students to compete in his first annual House Student App Challenge. The winning app will be displayed at the U.S. Capitol and featured on the U.S. House of Representatives website. “This is a great opportunity for kids and their parents to have fun, learn, and promote STEAM education,” said Cicilline, who serves on the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Courts, Intellectual Property, and the Internet that oversees information technology. “I encourage all eligible Rhode Islanders to participate in this competition and look forward to viewing what they create.”
WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Congressman David N. Cicilline (D-RI) today issued the following statement after the U.S. House of Representatives approved a clean debt-ceiling increase by a vote of 221 to 201 to avoid a default and suspend the debt limit through March 15, 2015. “I am pleased the House today passed legislation to avoid a default of our nation’s credit and protect the full faith and credit of the United States.  America must pay its bills and for too long Republicans have been playing games with the debt ceiling and putting America at risk,” said Cicilline, who noted that because Republicans did not act to approve normal borrowing authority when the statutory debt limit expired on February 7, 2014, the U.S. Treasury Department has been using “extraordinary measures” to continue paying the nation’s bills.
WASHINGTON, DC – The U.S. House of Representatives today approved legislation to undo a one percent cost of living adjustment (COLA) reduction for military retirees.  After the vote, which received bipartisan support, Cicilline issued the following statement: “We owe our veterans a debt of gratitude that we can never repay and while our troops are protecting our nation abroad we need to protect the benefits they deserve and have earned. “I am proud the House today acted to reverse the one percent cut to military retirement benefits, which was included in the budget deal reached last December, which I voted against.  I urge the Senate to act quickly on this important fix, which will prevent average lifetime military retiree benefits from being reduced by tens of thousands of dollars.
PAWTUCKET, RI – In an effort to help train Rhode Island’s workforce and build ladders of opportunity into the middle class, U.S. Congressman David N. Cicilline (D-RI) today congratulated a local company and association that are leading the way to end employment practices that disadvantage jobless Rhode Islanders and encouraged Rhode Island job training programs to apply for a new federal competition that would help make unemployed Rhode Islanders more job-ready.
PAWTUCKET, RI – U.S. Congressman David N. Cicilline (D-RI) today announced that Rhode Island will receive $3 million in Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) funds through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). “At a time of record breaking cold temperatures, this federal money will provide critical relief for Rhode Islanders,” said Cicilline, who voted for the 2014 omnibus appropriations bill that made this funding available. “This is welcome news to many families and seniors in Rhode Island who are struggling to afford higher than expected energy costs.”
PAWTUCKET, RI – In an effort to support our nation’s veterans and thank them for their service, U.S. Congressman David N. Cicilline (D-RI) today delivered almost 4,000 Valentine’s Day cards prepared by Rhode Island school children to veterans at the VA Medical Center in Providence and the Rhode Island Veterans Home in Bristol.  “We owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to our veterans who have served with honor and sacrificed so much to protect our country," said Cicilline. "This is one small way to say thank you and I am pleased so many student volunteers showed their support for our veterans and participated in this year’s ‘Valentines for Veterans.’”
WASHINGTON, DC – In an effort to restore the public’s confidence in government and reduce the influence of special interests in Washington, U.S. Congressman David N. Cicilline (D-RI) reintroduced legislation that would prohibit former members of Congress from becoming lobbyists.   Under current law, U.S. Senators are precluded from lobbying Members of Congress for two years after leaving office and members of the U.S. House of Representatives are prohibited from the same activity for a period of one year after leaving office.  Cicilline’s bill, H.R. 4014, would greatly expand the scope of current law – instituting a lifetime ban on former Members of Congress, both Senators and Representatives, from engaging in lobbying contacts with covered executive branch officials, or any Member, officer, or employee of either House of Congress.
