Judiciary Committee Passes Cicilline Bill to Lower Gas Prices

Thursday, February 7, 2019

WASHINGTON – The House Judiciary Committee passed the No Oil Producing and Exporting Cartels (NOPEC) Act today. Democratic Congressman David N. Cicilline (RI-01), who chairs the House Antitrust Subcommittee, and Republican Congressman Steve Chabot (OH-01) have championed the NOPEC Act since first introducing it last year.

The proposal helps fight high gas prices by making members of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and other foreign oil cartels subject to U.S. antitrust law.

Cicilline issued the following statement after the Judiciary Committee passed his bill:

“For a long time, the American people have been getting ripped off by foreign producers of oil. It has to stop. This bill is a commonsense step to end price gouging and take a stand for the people. The NOPEC Act will give meaningful relief to millions of Americans by authorizing the Justice Department to investigate and prosecute foreign oil cartels. I look forward to continuing to work on this proposal until we get it signed into law.”
