David Cicilline Endorsed by Pro-Democratic Rights Organizations

PROVIDENCE — Six organizations fighting for the advancement of democratic rights in America have endorsed David Cicilline’s campaign for re-election. The organizations include the Human Rights Campaign, End Citizens United, the Progressive Turnout Project, Defend the Vote, the Victory Fund, and Equality PAC.

“Our fundamental democratic rights as Americans are under attack by today’s Republican Party,” said Congressman Cicilline. “Rights as fundamental as our right to vote or to live openly as we truly are. These are the foundational concepts of our nation, and I will resist any attempt to roll back these efforts to strip Americans of their voice and essential protections. I’m honored to be supported by organizations dedicated to ensuring that LGBTQ+ Americans have equal treatment under the law and that every vote counts.”

“Congressman Cicilline is an exceptional public servant, a groundbreaking lawmaker and one of the most effective members of Congress. As one of the leading gay members of Congress, his sponsorship of the Equality Act and efforts to ensure its passage in the House of Representatives are building a foundation for what will one day be a law that ensures federal protections so that LGBTQ+ people can live free from fear of harassment and discrimination. He’s also a staunch pro-choice advocate and a strong voice for Rhode Island in Congress. The Human Rights Campaign is beyond proud to endorse his reelection to the U.S. House of Representatives,” said Joni Madison, Human Rights Campaign Interim President.

“When we think of who is leading the charge for change in Washington, David Cicilline is at the top of the list,” said Alex Morgan, Executive Director of Progressive Turnout Project. “David is focused on creating a level playing field for working Americans and their families, championing the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, Inflation Reduction Act, and Equality Act. And in the wake of the January 6th insurrection, David has been a leader in defending our democracy, supporting the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. Progressive Turnout Project is proud to support David Cicilline for re-election, because we need him to continue his important work in the U.S. House of Representatives.”

“It has never been more important to defend our pro-choice, pro-equality majority in Congress. From fighting for critical non-discrimination legislation to defending access to reproductive health care, David has consistently proven one of our best champions. With the future of LGBTQ equality on the ballot, we are proud to continue supporting David’s work to deliver real results for Rhode Islanders and our entire community,” said Sean Meloy, Vice President of Political Programs, LGBTQ Victory Fund.

As Chair of the Congressional LGBTQ+ Equality Caucus, and one of only nine openly LGBTQ+ members of the House of Representatives, Cicilline has been a vocal and passionate advocate in defense of equal rights for all Americans. Cicilline authored and introduced the Equality Act, historic legislation that passed the House in 2021 and would explicitly prohibit discrimination against LGBTQ+ Americans in employment, housing, public accommodations, government funded programs, education, credit, and jury selection. Cicilline also Chairs the Congressional LGBTQ+ Equality Caucus, playing a leading role in pushing pro-LGBTQ+ legislation through the House of Representative. Not only did the House pass his Equality Act and Global Respect Act this Congress, but also under David’s tenure as Caucus Chair, two Equality Caucus endorsed bills have been signed into law: the Jabara-Heyer NO HATE Act which improves resources to respond to hate crimes — including those committed against the LGBTQ+ community — and legislation to designate the Pulse nightclub as a National Memorial.
