Cicilline Statement on President Firing Secretary of State

Tuesday, March 13, 2018

WASHINGTON - U.S. Congressman David N. Cicilline (RI-01), a Democratic member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, issued the following statement today:

“Firing the Secretary of State with a Tweet sends a dangerous message to America's allies and adversaries alike.”

“The President has spent much of the past year hollowing out the State Department. In Secretary Tillerson, he appointed a man who was not ready for the job. He oversaw the greatest loss of experienced diplomats in our history. He has diminished the role of the State Department in American foreign policy.”

“Now, the President is sowing more chaos. His action raises new doubts about his decision-making. Just a day after Secretary Tillerson broke with the White House on Russia, he is out of a job. At a moment when we need strong diplomacy for North Korea and other challenging places around the world, the State Department is without a leader. The President's action is reckless and damaging to our interests.”
