Cicilline Statement on Trump Effort to Detain Migrant Children Indefinitely

WASHINGTON – Democratic Policy and Communications Committee (DPCC) Chair David N. Cicilline (RI-01) released the following statement today regarding the Trump administration’s most recent attempt to hold migrant children in detention facilities indefinitely by ending the Flores agreement, a decades-old rule requiring specific protections for undocumented children and families held in detention without basic standards of care:

“Today is a sad day for our nation. The President’s decision is nothing more than another illegal attempt to intimidate any family that is forced to flee their home country in search of safety and a better life for their children.”

“We know that prolonged detention can have a devastating impact on the health and wellbeing of any child. Yet, the President continues to double down on his shameful family separation agenda.”

“The President’s continued attacks on migrant families will fail again in court. He should instead join with Democrats in Congress to craft solutions to address the crisis at our southern border and create a safe environment for all families to contribute to our great country.”
