Cicilline Statement on Emergency Spending Bill

Wednesday, March 4, 2020

WASHINGTON – Democratic Policy and Communications Committee (DPCC) Chair David N. Cicilline (RI-01) issued the following statement today:

“This $8.3 billion emergency appropriation is an important first step to address the scale and seriousness of the coronavirus epidemic. It meets several urgent needs specific to Rhode Island. These resources will ensure an effective, coordinated, and comprehensive response to the challenge before us. We have additional work to do to protect workers who may be displaced or furloughed as a result of this crisis.”

“I am especially pleased this package includes nearly a billion dollars for drugs, masks, lab tests, and additional resources that will be provided to state and local health agencies; $7 billion in low-interest loans to affected small businesses, to help cushion the economic blow of this public health emergency; $3 billion for research and development of treatment and vaccines; and $300 million to ensure those vaccines are affordable.”

“The President should sign this bill as soon as it reaches his desk. Then he should let the doctors and public health experts do their jobs. He has politicized this issue and spread fear and misinformation. It’s time to let the professionals at CDC and NIH do their jobs to keep us safe.”
