Cicilline Making Bipartisan Wager on Super Bowl

Thursday, February 1, 2018

WASHINGTON – U.S. Congressman David N. Cicilline (D-RI) and U.S. Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA) are making this year’s Super Bowl a little more interesting by placing a friendly wager on the game. Following the outcome of Super Bowl LII, the loser will have to pose for a social media photo while wearing the winning team’s jersey.

“New Englanders are blessed to be living through an unprecedented era of dominance by our pro sports teams. No team has given us more years of joy over the past two decades than the New England Patriots,” said Cicilline. “This Sunday, I’m looking forward to seeing Tom Brady and Bill Belichick add yet another credential to their resumes for Canton.”

“Philadelphia is a city of underdogs; our Eagles are exactly where we want them to be going into the big game,” said Fitzpatrick. “We’ve overcome injuries and adversity every step of the way, now the only thing standing between the Birds and our first Super Bowl victory are those New England Patriots. I’m confident that come Sunday night we’ll see Philly finally raising the Lombardi Trophy. I hope Rep. Cicilline likes midnight green.”

If Tom Brady leads New England to yet another Super Bowl championship, Cicilline will present Fitzpatrick with a Rob Gronkowski jersey to wear on Capitol Hill. In the event that the Pats fall short against the same team they dominated in Super Bowl XXXIX, Cicilline will be obligated to don a Philadelphia Eagles jersey of Fitzpatrick’s choosing.

The Patriots, who finished the regular season 13-3, secured their 10th Super Bowl appearance last month following a dramatic comeback win over the Jacksonville Jaguars in the AFC Championship Game. The Eagles, who also finished the regular season 13-3, overcame a season-ending knee injury to their starting quarterback Carson Wentz in Week 14 in order to advance to their third Super Bowl in franchise history. At the end of Sunday’s game, Philadelphia is hoping to hoist their franchise’s first Lombardi Trophy, while the Patriots are going for their sixth world title.

A former starter at fullback for the Narragansett High School Mariners, Cicilline is now serving his fourth term in Congress as the Representative for Rhode Island’s First District. Fitzpatrick is a former FBI Supervisory Special Agent serving his first term representing Pennsylvania’s Eighth District.
