Cicilline, Dems Announce A Better Deal: Tools to Succeed in the 21st Century

Friday, April 27, 2018

ALEXANDRIA, VA – Democratic Policy and Communications Committee (DPCC) Co-Chair David N. Cicilline (RI-01), Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, and leading House Democrats held a press conference at Northern Virginia Community College this morning to unveil the newest plank of their bold economic agenda – A Better Deal: Tools to Succeed in the 21st Century. The new plank, which Cicilline helped develop alongside his fellow members of the House Democratic Leadership, underscores Democrats’ commitment to invest in America’s workers, pioneer future frontiers, and modernize government.

Tools to Succeed in the 21st Century

April 27, 2018

Good morning.

It’s a great honor to be here. I want to thank the President and the Provost and Congressman Beyer for hosting us. It’s always a great pleasure to be with the Democratic Leader and thank her for her leadership on this issue, and of course, as she really led this working group.

I also want to acknowledge two of our other colleagues who are here – Congressman Mike Thompson from the state of California and Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson from the great state of Texas. So, happy to have all of our colleagues here.

As Leader Pelosi mentioned, last July we launched A Better Deal that was really based on three pillars: raising incomes, cause folks are just not making enough money to get by; reducing the costs in peoples’ lives – that’s everything from health care to child care to higher education; and the third pillar is making sure people have the skills and the tools to be successful in the 21st Century.

So I’m very proud today that we are launching a detailed plan with respect to that third pillar.

As I was introduced, I’m David Cicilline from the great State of Rhode Island, and along with Cheri Bustos from the State of Illinois and Hakeem Jeffries from the State of New York, I serve as Co-Chair of the Democratic Policy and Communications Committee.

And for more than a year now, we have seen that, of course, Republicans have control of Congress and the White House. And for more than a year, they’ve been giving working people in this country a raw deal.

A raw deal on health care. A raw deal on taxes. A raw deal that makes the wealthy and well-connected stronger than ever while working people are asked to sacrifice more and more.

President Trump promised to fix the rigged system that is holding working families back. But on his watch, the system has gotten even more rigged.

Democrats are offering a better deal.

Our economic agenda, including the plans we’re announcing today, will produce better jobs, better wages, and a better future.

And central to that promise is our commitment to invest in America’s workers, break new ground on the frontiers of science, and give the American people a modern government that is smart, effective, and capable of delivering results for the people it serves.

Government at its worst functions for a small group of powerful people. That’s what we’ve seen over the past year.

At its best, government lifts up all Americans, not only those who have already made it.

Democrats don’t want working people just to get by, we want them to get ahead, and we have a plan to do just that.

We want the schoolteacher in Alexandria to know that her hard work is honored with a good paycheck. We want the single mom, who’s working two jobs in Providence, to know that she’ll be able to give her kids a better life and more opportunity than she’s had.

We want the senior in Wisconsin to live with dignity, and without the fear of being unable to afford her prescription drugs.

We want our government to work for every American, not just the wealthy donors who control the Republican Party.

And when we take back the House this November, we’re going to get to work to expand opportunity, raise wages, and lower costs.

We’re going to give the American people a government that works for them.

We’re going to end this raw deal and give the American people A Better Deal.
