WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman David N. Cicilline (RI-01) today applauded the Federal Trade Commission’s proposed rule to ban noncompete clauses in employment contacts.
“Noncompete clauses imposed on employees are a fundamental threat to workers’ economic freedom and mobility and stifle innovation and competition. Some of these agreements even prevent workers from finding new employment after being fired without cause,” said Congressman Cicilline. “These clauses drive down wages and prevent workers from moving onto better, and sometimes more lucrative, job opportunities and, in some cases, can hinder an employee’s ability from leaving a hostile work environment. The end of noncompete clauses is a win for workers and competition.”
