Gun Violence Prevention

Everyday, 89 Americans die in an incident of gun violence. More than 108,000 Americans are shot each year, including 17,000 children. Last year, there was nearly one mass shooting for every day of the calendar year.

Americans kill each other with guns at a rate 297 higher than Japan, 49 times higher than France, and 33 times higher than Israel. But even in the face of this overwhelming violence, the Republicans who control Congress have done nothing to move forward on legislation that would reduce gun violence in our country.

David Cicilline is different.

As a founding member of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, David led the City of Providence to its lowest crime rate in more than 40 years. As a member of Congress, he’s taking on the National Rifle Association and demanding action that will keep guns out of the hands of children, criminals, and those with severe mental illness such that possessing a gun would make them a threat to themselves or their families.

Last year, David introduced the Assault Weapons Ban to ban the production and purchase of new assault-style weapons that are designed to kill as many people as quickly as possible. As a member of the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, David has also introduced bills to expand background checks, improve the reporting of mental health records to the NICS system, and prohibit anyone convicted of a misdemeanor hate crime from purchasing a gun.

Although Republicans have refused to consider any legislation to address the crisis of gun violence in this country, David is going to continue standing up and speaking out for commonsense laws that will protect children and families in Rhode Island and across the country.
