Cicilline Statement on Trump’s Opiate Announcement

Thursday, October 26, 2017

PAWTUCKET – U.S. Congressman David N. Cicilline (RI-01) issued the following statement today after President Trump declared a public health emergency to combat the opiate crisis:

“I’m pleased that the President recognized the importance of fighting opiate addiction today. Now, he needs to back up his words with real actions.

“336 Rhode Islanders died last year as a result of a drug overdose. More than 200 have already died this year. More people are dying from drug overdoses than car crashes.”

“But whenever the President talks about cutting Medicaid funding or repealing the Affordable Care Act, he’s talking about actions that will make this crisis even worse. If he’s serious about taking on the opiate epidemic, he needs to work with members of both parties in Congress to provide whatever resources are necessary to preserve life and help people break the cycle of addiction. That’s the only way we’re going to get a handle on this problem.”
