Cicilline Statement on Trump’s Cuba Policy

Friday, June 16, 2017

PAWTUCKET – U.S. Congressman David N. Cicilline (D-RI), who traveled to Cuba last year as part of President Barack Obama’s historic visit, issued the following statement today:

“Leaving Cuba out in the cold has never been an effective policy, and certainly after fifty years it’s long past time to try something new. I was proud to join President Obama in Cuba last year as he turned the page on misguided policies and opened the door for a new era of economic cooperation between our two countries. I’ve seen firsthand the possibilities for our manufacturers and exporters to expand into the Cuban market and create good-paying jobs in the United States. That’s why I’m so disappointed that President Trump is breaking his promise to put working people first. This shift in policy is harmful, not helpful.”

“We can walk and chew gum at the same time - we can stand up for democracy while still engaging a government like Castro's Cuba. In fact that is what we have done over the years and the results are clear. When the United States engages with other countries the result is an increased appreciation for the rule of law, self-determination, freedom, and human rights.”
