Cicilline Statement on GOP Budget That Undermines Working Families

Thursday, October 26, 2017

WASHINGTON – Democratic Policy and Communications Committee (DPCC) Co-Chair David N. Cicilline (RI-01) issued the following statement today after House Republicans narrowly passed a budget that paves the way for huge cuts to Medicare, Medicaid, and other critical services, in order to cut taxes for billionaires, millionaires, and large corporations:

“If a budget is a statement of your values, then this budget shows Washington Republicans don’t give a damn about working people. The budget Republicans passed today cuts Medicare and Medicaid by nearly $1.5 trillion. It cuts mandatory transportation funding by $200 billion. It cuts funding to make college more affordable by $100 billion. And it raises taxes on the middle class. Republicans are doing all this just so they can give millionaires, billionaires, and wealthy corporations a huge tax cut.”

“The wealthy have done extremely well in recent years. This budget is a great deal for them, but it’s a raw deal for working men and women.”

“Democrats are fighting to give working people A Better Deal. That means investing in good-paying jobs; raising wages; rebuilding our bridges, roads, and schools; lowering prescription drug costs; breaking up corporate monopolies; and expanding job training opportunities. We should be enacting a budget that promotes real economic growth and helps create good-paying jobs. This Republican budget does just the opposite.”
