Cicilline Statement on Chemical Weapons Attack in Syria

WASHINGTON – U.S. Congressman David N. Cicilline (D-RI), a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, issued the following statement today after the Assad regime apparently carried out a chemical weapons attack that killed dozens of innocent Syrians and sickened hundreds more:

“Like all Americans, I was horrified by the images of this barbaric attack on civilians, including many innocent children. The Assad regime’s reprehensible actions today demand a strong condemnation from the international community. The civilized world cannot tolerate the use of chemical weapons. And we must ensure that those who would use these weapons are brought to justice.”

“The Trump administration’s approach to Syria so far has been astounding. It is shameful that the White House is no longer seeking to remove Bashar al-Assad from power. In fact, last fall, candidate Trump went as far as to suggest that Assad could be a useful ally in the fight against ISIS.”

“This pattern of looking the other way in the face of unspeakable atrocities is disgraceful. It undermines our core values as Americans. And there is little doubt that atrocities like this one will multiply if the White House continues to embolden Assad.”

“The Trump administration should reexamine their decision immediately. And they must work with Republicans and Democrats in Congress, as well as our international allies, to craft an appropriate response.”
