Cicilline Slams Trump's Executive Order on Offshore Drilling

Friday, April 28, 2017

WASHINGTON - U.S. Congressman and Democratic Policy and Communications Committee Co-Chair David N. Cicilline (D-RI) issued the following statement today after President Donald Trump signed an executive order directing the U.S. Department of the Interior to “reconsider” existing regulations on offshore drilling:

“Let's be clear - this executive order is nothing more than the first step towards opening Rhode Island's 400 miles of coastline to offshore oil and gas drilling. It will put at risk Rhode Island's tourism and fishing industries, which support thousands of jobs and billions of dollars in revenue each year. It will worsen our addiction to fossil fuels and weaken job growth in the renewable energy sector.”

“All of us have a responsibility to be good stewards of our environment. Seven years ago, the Deepwater Horizon disaster showed us all the risks of offshoring drilling. It's disappointing that Donald Trump is trying to turn back the clock to help his friends in the oil and gas companies.”
